Young Achievers Trust: Programmes team trustee
Summary
We are looking for a motivated young person to join our Board of Trustees and help us co-ordinate the delivery of the Young Achievers Awards programme.
Context
The Young Achievers Trust is a youth-led charity which celebrates, recognises and supports the contribution of young volunteers aged 16 to 25 in England. We deliver the Young Achievers Awards, which aim to:
- recognise, grow and nurture exceptional young volunteers to enable them to achieve the greatest possible impact in their communities
- Inspire more young people to become engaged in volunteering and create positive stories about young people in the media.
Each year we award prizes to 16 winners and runners up across the four Young Achievers Awards categories. Each winner receives a unique one-year package of support and development opportunities. This enables our young volunteers to grow and develop their voluntary work by learning new skills and developing as individuals, accessing new contacts and funding opportunities and being supported to create quality volunteering opportunities for other young people.
The Young Achievers Trust is a uniquely youth-led organisation. Many young volunteers were involved in delivering our 2011 programme, and the Trust is led by a Trustee Board of 12 young people. This helps us to ensure we remain relevant to young people, and responsive to their needs.
Why we need you
The Programmes team are responsible for co-ordinating the delivery of our most important work: the Young Achievers Awards.
Over the past year, we have:
- Celebrated the contribution of young volunteers, attracting 150 nominations from across the country
- Provided financial and capacity building support to enable 16 exceptional young volunteers to develop their projects and inspire other young people to take action
- Reached a national audience with positive media stories about young people through television, radio and the press
The Programmes team leads the charity (our volunteers, partner organisations and other trustees) in developing and delivering this work. They work to ensure that the Awards reach the widest possible range of young people, particularly those who have overcome significant barriers to become active citizens. They also bring together and evaluate the one-year package of support we provide to award winners.
What will I be doing?
You will become a member of the Young Achievers Trust Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees leads the charity, setting our strategic aims and ensuring the organisation is well-managed. As we operate without staff, each trustee takes a lead on a specific area of the Trust’s work.
Your role as a Trustee will include:
- Governing the Young Achievers Trust: ensuring our work is evaluated, our finances well-managed & the charity registers any risks it might face
- Ensuring we act within our charitable objectives as set out in our constitution and comply with relevant legislation and regulations
- Attending meetings of the Board of Trustees, contributing to and agreeing our strategic plans
Additionally, as a member of the Programmes team, you will jointly be responsible for:
- Project managing the Young Achievers Awards, including the development and delivery of the nominations process and judging
- Developing and delivering the one year package of support and development opportunities providing to award winners
- Ensuring the Trust involves a diverse range of young people in strategic and operational decision making wherever possible
- Monitoring and evaluating the impact of our work for young people
The Programmes team divides their responsibilities according to people’s interests and availability.
What skills do I need?
- An enthusiasm for the contribution young people make to their communities
- An interest in charities and/or youth programmes, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills and knowledge in this area
- Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
- The ability to think strategically
- Strong organisational skills
- To be aged 16 to 25 on the date you start volunteering (remembering that the Young Achievers Trust is a youth-led charity)
No experience or knowledge of the voluntary sector or being a trustee is required, but is desirable.
How much time to do I need to commit?
We expect this role will require a commitment of 8-10 hours per month. This is a flexible volunteering role, which means your volunteering can generally take place at times that suit you and be organised alongside your other commitments. The Board meets during the early evening once every two months in Central London. Your team meets on an ad hoc basis throughout the year.
What support will I be given?
- You will be part of the Young Achievers Trust Programmes team. This is a small team of 3 people, who will provide ongoing support to discuss progress with the Awards
- Guidance and support from the Trust’s advisory board
- Reasonable out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed
- Budget will be made available for you to identify opportunities to involve other young volunteers in your work
What benefits can I expect?
- The opportunity to make a real and sustainable impact for a charity
- Experience, and an understanding, of managing a charity and delivering programmes for young people
- Insight into the operations and challenges for a small charity
